Stefan Borson issues Man City 115 charges update, this is how it will affect title race

The case regarding Man City’s 115 charges has been slammed for how long it has taken to reach a verdict, believing it has been a distraction for Pep Guardiola’s side in the title race.

This is according to former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the verdict should have been out now, and its consistent pending has put the Premier League into a “difficult situation”.

It has now been more than three years since the 115 charges were laid against the eight-time Premier League champions, yet a verdict appears to be no closer.

Stefan Borson: Man City case will likely drag into next season

An independent commission hearing started in September 2024 regarding the issue and ended in December that same year, with the panel still considering its verdict.

Man City have been accused of allegedly breaching the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules over a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018.

On top of this, Pep Guardiola’s side are alleged to have concealed payments through third parties by disguising them as sponsorship revenue.

Yet, an outcome of the case has not been decided, and with Man City currently fighting for another Premier League title, the wait has been deemed an unwelcome distraction for the Citizens by Borson.

He exclusively told Football Insider: “How can it be reasonable for a situation where, in the middle of a title race, to have this pending again. I just think it should have been out by now. It’s going to cause all sorts of problems for them, almost regardless of what it says.

“It brings the league into a very difficult situation in terms of integrity either way. So if there’s a finding against City, then there’s a question about integrity. If there’s a finding for City, then there’s the integrity the other way, the distraction and everything else that is happening in the middle of another title race or a meaningful campaign.

“I think it cuts across what the league is trying to do in terms of, effectively, a global product. One of our most important in the UK, one of our most important industries. And this thing has sat over the league now for years and years and years.

“They’ve effectively allowed it to pollute another season. And by the way, almost certainly, depending on what the result is, pollute another season because the likelihood is that if this goes against City, we’re going to then have quite a period of preparation for a sanction hearing.

“We’re then going to have to wait for the sanction decision, and we’re then going to have to deal with appeals. And all of that is going to go into next season. Almost certainly.

“So, I think it’s an absolute mess. Everybody thinks it’s a mess, but there’s no excuse now for 14, 15 months of drafting a decision in a private disciplinary quasi-arbitration. There’s just no excuse.”

Odds of Man City winning Premier League title this season

Despite Man City still being well in the race for the Premier League title, their odds are viewed as slim.

According to Opta on 18 February, Arsenal remain overwhelming favourites ahead of their away tie to Wolves on Wednesday, with an 85.82 per cent chance of ending the campaign top.

In comparison, Man City have a 12.06 per cent chance of landing the Premier League crown once more after a difficult start to the season.

However, it remains to be seen if the Citizens are able to pull off a remarkable comeback and end the campaign at the summit.
