Stefan Borson: Liverpool to accelerate Mohamed Salah sale plan after he ’costs them £15m’

Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool remains up in the air following his high-profile dispute at Anfield.

Salah hit the headlines following his controversial comments in an interview after Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds United on 6 December.

Salah admitted he has no relationship with Arne Slot after he was named on the bench for a third match in a row.

Football Insider revealed on 7 December Saudi Pro League sides are expected to make offers to sign Salah in the January transfer window.

Mohamed Salah situation compared to Kevin De Bruyne

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Liverpool were probably planning to sell Salah next summer, so him leaving in January is just moving the transfer forward six months.

Salah signed a new two-year contract at Liverpool in April, extending his deal at Anfield until June 2027.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “I think he almost certainly will end up in Saudi Arabia during January. To be honest with you, I don’t think it’s a bad outcome for Liverpool.

“Yes, of course, it’s Mo Salah and he’s been an amazing player for them for eight years. They were probably borderline in the summer as to whether to give him the contract or whether just to call it quits.

“It’s similar in a way to City and Kevin De Bruyne probably, although Salah has looked in better shape maybe than Kevin De Bruyne. There was that belief that he could do another couple of years.

“But I suspect they always worked on the basis that maybe he would do one year and then they’d sell him, so this is only bringing it forward perhaps six months.”

Before extending his contract with Slot’s side, there was talk earlier this year of Salah receiving a stake in Al-Hilal if he decided to move to Saudi.

Liverpool could agree £50m Salah deal

Borson revealed Salah, who turned 33 in June, has probably cost Liverpool around £15million for the first half of this season.

“I think where Liverpool may end up is a deal where okay, it’s not been worth the first six months of this season, it’s been expensive, it’s probably cost them maybe £15m more for this first half of the season, but he’ll probably go and they’ll get quite a sizeable fee, probably in excess of £50m,” said Borson.

“That is not a bad outcome on a purely business sense, and everybody will move on and Liverpool’s rebuild to the extent that’s what it is will continue.”

Liverpool signed Salah from Roma in 2017, with the deal worth around £34m for the Egypt international.
