Stefan Borson: Rangers fans could reject potential takeover deal
Rangers fans “won’t accept” a potential takeover from a multi-club organisation if they are not the top dog in the group.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that becoming part of a network is “feasible” but would present “challenges” for a buyer to overcome.
Rangers released documents showing their accounts for the 2023-24 season on 29 October, showing that the club’s net losses increased by £4.1million from the 2022-23 campaign to £17.2million.
The Ibrox club have just £1.7million cash in the bank, while rivals Celtic have £77.2million in their reserves.
Rangers are currently without a permanent chairman, CEO or director of football operations after a number of key departures in recent months.
Football Insider has been told by ex-Aberdeen chief Keith Wyness (9 November) that Rangers must now “trust” a new ownership group to come in and implement a “dramatic rethink”.
Rangers fans ‘won’t accept’ being underdog in multi-club network, says Borson
When asked about the prospect of a foreign buyer coming in for Rangers, Borson told Football Insider: “Rangers could become part of a multi-club organisation.
“Could other clubs use the Scottish league to blood their youth players and develop them up there for the group?
“That seems feasible.
“But the flip side is that the value of Rangers is a lot more significant than other clubs in a potential group.
“Then you’ve also got the issue with the perception of the fans. Being the primary club in a multi-club group will be a challenge for them.
“Fans won’t put up with it. Let’s say the Nottingham Forest group buys Rangers, the fans won’t up with being a subservient club to Forest.

“Regardless of what Forest fans would think, or the owners – they just won’t accept being the younger sister.
“These are all challenges to finding a new overseas buyer.”
