Stefan Borson reacts to Jamie Carragher claim after ‘crazy’ Liverpool twist

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has put the rumours surrounding his future to bed after signing a new contract at Anfield.

The Egypt international could have left on a free this summer, but he has now penned a new two-year deal worth £20million a season.

Salah had been heavily linked with a move to Saudi before eventually deciding to extend his stay at Liverpool following months of uncertainty.

Virgil van Dijk is also understood to have agreed a new two-year deal, with his current contract expiring on 30 June.

Writing in his Telegraph column on 11 April, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher insisted the club have “played a blinder” in the negotiations with Salah and Van Dijk.

“Throughout the process, most of the criticism has been directed at Liverpool and their new sporting director, Richard Hughes, for not resolving such a critical issue sooner,” said Carragher.

“It was unwarranted. Liverpool approached this exactly how they had to. They have played a blinder, refusing to cave in to pressure.

“It does not matter how good a player is, you do not rush to give long and lucrative contract extensions to players who will be 32 and 33 at the end of their current deals. Only poorly run clubs operate in that way.”

However, finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider he doesn’t accept Carragher’s stance after insisting it was “crazy” to let the situation drag on until April.

Salah has registered 32 goals and 23 assists in 46 appearances this season, while Van Dijk has started in all 44 of his outings as Arne Slot’s side look set to win the Premier League title.

Liverpool ‘well placed’ after contract news

Borson believes Liverpool are well placed for next season following the contract updates.

He told Football Insider: “Liverpool know exactly what they’re doing.

“I don’t accept what Jamie Carragher was saying about this being a good idea or not a good idea, but there was sort of nothing more that they could have done.

“I think it was frankly crazy to allow the situations to go all the way through to April.

“But it turned out okay in the end, and you know they’re clearly well placed again for next season.”

Liverpool could agree £30m Ben Doak deal

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Liverpool are prepared to sell Ben Doak following interest from Everton, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

The 19-year-old isn’t expected to break into Slot’s first-team squad and could be allowed to leave if an acceptable offer arrives.

Liverpool will demand £30million to sell Doak this summer after rejecting a £15million bid from Palace in January.

The Scotland international has registered three goals and seven assists in 24 appearances on loan at Middlesbrough this season.
