Stefan Borson reveals ‘the truth’ as Aston Villa controversy intensifies

Aston Villa are expecting their supporters to play their part after announcing high ticket prices for their upcoming Champions League games.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the club are making losses at the moment.

Villa are charging up to £97 a ticket for home Champions League matches this season, which led to the Supporters Trust calling the club “out of touch.”

The Premier League side also increased season ticket prices by 5 per cent for this season, adding to the frustration from a fan perspective.

Aston Villa want fans to step up with the ticket prices

“They would expect fans to have to play their part,” Borson told Football Insider.

“We are also in the middle of inflation around live events, and that’s not going to change.

“I don’t think it’s an excuse to say PSR, it is true that Villa are making losses, and it is true that Villa’s owners have put a lot of money in.

“None of us as fans enjoy paying big prices, but unfortunately supply and demand will ultimately exist around pricing, and I’m sure that in every boardroom they are mindful of keeping fans onside and providing a good product for the fans.

“However, they will also be mindful that lots of other clubs are charging just as much if not more than Aston Villa for Champions League football.

“It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that they are not minded to reward the fans with very cheap Champions League tickets.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery sat in the dugout

“They might reward them with a cheap Carabao Cup scheme, but the Champions League they’re going to maximise.

“I don’t think it’s particularly surprising, and I don’t think Villa as a board are misleading the fans by saying it’s related to things like sustainability and profits because it is.”
