Stefan Borson shares new details on Man United sacking Erik ten Hag

Manchester United likely included a damages clause in Erik ten Hag’s new contract that will make it easier for them to sack him.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Old Trafford chiefs will have structured the clause with a view that the Dutch manager’s deal could be terminated within a year of singing it.

Man United have made their worst start to a league season in 35 years as they currently sit 14th in the Premier League table.

The Manchester giants’ hierarchy held a meeting at the INEOS offices in Knightsbridge on 8 October, where Ten Hag’s future was discussed.

But United have insisted it was a regular meeting that was already planned in the diary as Sir Jim Ratcliffe led the talks with chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.

Ten Hag only signed a new contract until 2026 in July this year after he was given another chance to prove himself at Old Trafford.

But Borson suggested the expenditure of sacking Ten Hag will just go down as a cost of doing business if club chiefs decide to pull the trigger.

“I don’t think it will be driven by the pounds and pence,” Borson told Football Insider.

“Ultimately, if you have to get rid of somebody, it’s an unfortunate cost of doing business and you just have to take that cost.

“If anything, I suspect that they managed to get in the new contract a damages clause that would go to Ten Hag that United were happy with and would be structured in a way that they made sense because they were renegotiating the contract with a view that it could be happening within the next 12 months anyway that it might be terminated.

“I suspect they have actually made it easier for themselves in that sense rather than more difficult.”
