Stefan Borson shares verdict on Brentford PSR ‘concerns’ after £8m blow

Brentford released their financial results for the 2023-24 campaign last week (18 February), revealing a pre-tax loss of almost £8million.

The Bees finished 16th in the Premier League last term and exited both domestic cup competitions at the third round stage.

As per the club’s financial report, Brentford’s wage bill grew £15.6million to £114.4million while other operating expenses ballooned 39% to £42.5million.

Premier League clubs can only lose £105million across a three-year period to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

‘No concerns’ as Brentford wage bill balloons, says Borson

This season, Brentford sit 11th in the top-flight table and are just seven points adrift of the top four with 12 games left to play.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider insisted he has “no concerns” with Brentford’s results for last season – with the club still “miles ahead” of a potential PSR breach.

He claimed the wage bill is always expected to grow with the Bees becoming a more established presence in the Premier League.

Borson told Football Insider: “On a PSR basis, they are miles ahead – no concerns there.

“The wage bill has grown a lot, but they are more established in the Premier League and they have a better team on the pitch – you expect it to grow.

“They’re well-structured. There’s a big shareholder loan, which is the nature of being owned by a high net-worth backer.

“Apparently he is looking to sell a portion of the club, so we’ll see how that goes.

“These numbers are fine if they are in the top half of the Premier League.”

‘Newcastle prepared to pay Brentford’s Mbuemo asking price’

Football Insider has been told by former Man United chief scout Mick Brown (20 February) that Newcastle are prepared to meet Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo asking price in the summer transfer window.

The Bees are under pressure to cash in on Mbuemo, whose contract expires in 2026.

He has scored 15 goals and contributed five assists in 30 games across all competitions this season.
