Stefan Borson slams Premier League after stunning Everton twist

The Premier League will feel Everton should have been forced to pay more of its legal costs following the court cases between the two parties last season.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the governing body will have felt its position was vindicated by the independent commission after the Merseysiders landed two separate points deductions.

Everton were charged with two breaches of the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) last season, leading to them being docked a total of eight points.

The Times reported on 4 September the Premier League has failed in its attempt to force the club into picking up its full £4.9million legal costs for the PSR case.

Everton have instead been ordered to pay just £1.7million of the total bill, leaving the governing body to pay the remaining £3.2million.

Premier League taught lesson to lower costs after Everton case

Borson insisted it will be a lesson to the Premier League to try and keep its costs proportionate and reasonable in any future cases.

He told Football Insider: “You have to really read the whole costs decision to understand the rationale behind why the Premier League were only awarded £1.7million.

“The Premier League bill of nearly £5million does seem excessive, but that is the nature of having the best representation that money can buy, and that’s what the Premier League have had.

“They have had Linklaters, who are one of the premier law firms in the world, and they had barristers who are similar premier barristers of the world. Of course, it’s going to cost a lot of money.

“The independent commission said ‘You can’t claim all of it from Everton, you are going to have to wear some of that cost yourself’. It’s just a fact of life in these sorts of cases.

“I think maybe the Premier League will have felt that given the outcome of the independent commission and so much of their position was vindicated by the independent commission in the Everton case, they probably will have felt they should have got more of their costs back.

“But it’s a lesson in terms of keeping costs proportionate and reasonable.”
