Stefan Borson stunned after Bournemouth financial reveal – ‘PSR is finished’
Bournemouth are likely to have caused a stir among their fellow Premier League clubs following a new financial reveal.
The Dorset side posted a £77.2million pre-tax loss in the 2022-24 profit and sustainability (PSR) cycle, with top-flight clubs permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.
Bournemouth’s revenue increased from £141million in 2022-23 to £161million last season.
The Athletic reported on 10 April the club avoided a PSR breach after the Premier League approved a £71.4million shareholder loan write-off in December 2022 following Bill Foley’s takeover.
Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider PSR is “finished” if clubs are permitted these sorts of transactions.
Everton and Forest were both deducted points last season after they were charged by the Premier League for breaching the PSR rules.

Premier League slammed after ‘crazy’ Bournemouth twist
Borson insisted the way the Premier League has applied the PSR rules is a “crazy” contradiction.
He told Football Insider: “I think PSR is finished if you can find these sorts of things to do these sorts of transactions, which are clearly not within the spirit of profit and sustainability rules.
“Whatever you think of profit sustainability, the idea is not that you find an accounting method to create profits to get you through overspending. That’s not the idea of PSR. I don’t think anybody could argue that that was the intention.
“It was never meant to be just a competition for accountants to come up with ways in which you could create paper profits on your PSR submission if that’s what multiple clubs have done.
“We know that Everton had quite a lot of these sorts of discussions with the Premier League. The common picture that the Premier League punished Everton very unfairly is not quite right.
“The Premier League bent over for a long time to try and get Everton compliant. Ultimately, they failed. In similar ways to Nottingham Forest, there were conversations with Nottingham Forest the whole way through that season in which they failed, but they didn’t act.
“I don’t have a huge amount of sympathy when they ultimately breached and admitted the breaches.
“That said, I think fans rightly will be asking what sort of system is this where you can have such draconian penalties to clubs on the one hand, enormous penalties of points that can change seasons.
“Then on the other hand, you permit teams to be allowed paper profits from things that look clearly outside of the spirit of the rules. That contradiction has to be just crazy.”
