Stefan Borson suggests how much Tottenham are really paying for Mathys Tel

Tottenham agreed two last-ditch deals in the January transfer window to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season.

Spurs signed centre-back Kevin Danso and forward Mathys Tel before the window closed, adding to their earlier £12.5million addition of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

The north London giants will sign Danso permanently for £21million from Lens in the summer, while they have a £45million option to buy Tel from Bayern Munich.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the loan fee for Tel could be as much as £8.3million.

The 19-year-old scored his first goal for the club in the 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday (9 February).

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Football Insider Tottenham view Tel as Son Heung-min’s long-term replacement after questions have been asked about his future in north London.

Tottenham could be paying huge Mathys Tel loan fee

Borson revealed Tottenham could be paying up to £12.5million to loan the French forward until the end of the season.

He told Football Insider: “Ultimately, it depends how much they have paid to get that look at him.

“I have read two totally contrasting things. I was told originally that there was no loan fee at all, which sounded like a great deal.

“But now it appears that Bayern Munich are briefing that the loan fee was actually €10million (£8.3million), which looks like a very different scenario and a very expensive deal to have a look at him.

“If he scores 20 goals between now and the end of the season, they have got a fixed fee that they will pay, so they don’t need to worry about negotiating the fee if he’s a massive success.

“That would be a great deal, but the flip side is we have seen very promising young players come in on loan and do nothing. If Tel effectively does nothing, then it’s a very expensive deal because they will have paid €10million if that is the loan fee.

“They have paid his wages, which will probably be another let’s say €5million (£4.2million). It’s €15million (£12.5million) for five months. If the player doesn’t work, that will be a very bad deal.

“But the flip side is, if you are getting a look at close quarters at a player who could have great potential and you have capped out the price, then that could be a good deal.”
