Stefan Borson ‘surprised’ by Newcastle United stance on Man City case
It is a surprise that Newcastle United are not more “front and centre” in Manchester City’s legal battle against the Premier League.
That is the view of former City financial advisor Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle will be in support of City’s case as they are the club who have been “most damaged” by the associated party transaction rules.
City are set to challenge the Premier League over their commercial rules in a two-week hearing starting on Monday (10 June).
As revealed by Football Insider, Newcastle are prepared to submit documents in support of Man City ahead of their arbitration hearing next week.
The APT rules were first introduced in December 2021 following PiF’s takeover of Newcastle.
The Tyneside club have struck sponsorship deals with Saudi Arabian companies since the agreement, but have had to ensure they all meet fair market value.
Borson revealed that he is confident that Newcastle will support City’s case, even if their support is not public.
Newcastle United will support Man City case after being damaged by rules
“One of the main surprises is that Newcastle are not more front and centre in respect of these rules,” Borson told Football Insider’s James Murray.
“They are the club that clearly has been most damaged by the introduction of new rules – I don’t think anybody within the Premier League would deny that.
“If you look at the dates of the rules and the process that went on around it, it’s very clear that these were rules against Newcastle.
“The rules were clearly focused on Newcastle and preventing their sort of emergence,
“After the early success that they had I think it became even more important for the other major clubs to try and stop their growth.

“If City are running the case, then obviously Newcastle don’t need to, but I think there’s no question they’ll be in support.
“As for how publicly? I don’t know.“
