Stefan Borson: This is how much Marc Guehi will earn after finalising Man City deal

Manchester City saw off interest from several top clubs to secure a deal for Marc Guehi.

Guehi joined Man City for £20million from Crystal Palace, where his contract was due to expire on 30 June.

There was an expectation Guehi would remain at Selhurst Park until the summer before Pep Guardiola’s side presented him with an offer he couldn’t refuse.

The 25-year-old has signed a contract until 2031 with the 10-time English champions.

Guehi made his debut at the Etihad Stadium in Man City’s 2-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday (24 January).

Why Marc Guehi is set to earn huge wages at Man City

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Guehi will receive a “large chunk” of the savings Guardiola’s side made on his transfer fee.

Liverpool and Arsenal were heavily linked with the England international before he secured a move to the Etihad.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Guehi’s wages, Borson said: “Let’s say he’s worth £65m, City bought him in for £20m, apparently there aren’t actually any add-ons of note aside from the sell-on profit.

“I mean, obviously again there’s all sorts of debate as to what the terms are, but a very reliable city correspondent said it is £20m, so City have saved let’s say £45m. Of course, a large chunk of that £45m is going to the player.

“It’s either going in the form of payments to him or, alternatively, it’s going into his wages on top of what his market value might be. His market value might be a £200,000-250,000 package, but because he’s a free transfer, he’s a package of £300-350k. That’s just the reality.”

How much is Man City’s overall wage bill?

Borson insisted Guehi’s wages are not a surprise given Man City’s overall wage bill, which stood at £408m last season.

“These sorts of numbers are not a shock when you see gross numbers of £400m for the entire wage bill of a football club,” said Borson.

“Remember, of course, when people talk about the wage bill, it’s of all the staff. I understand that it’s 1,000 people, but you have to also understand that in a football club, the top 25 earners are accounting for something like 75 per cent of those wage bills.

“It is pretty skewed that the football clubs are not paying big money to the tail of the 1,000 people. The money in that wage bill, 75 per cent of it is going to the players.”

However, Deloitte’s 2026 Money League has revealed Man City no longer pay the highest wages in the Premier League.

Liverpool’s wage bill surged from £386m to £421m last season due to the bonuses owed to players and staff after winning the top-flight title.
