Stefan Borson: This is the most likely scenario for Bruno Fernandes after Man United clause revealed
Bruno Fernandes has continuously been linked with a Manchester United exit over the past couple of years.
Fernandes rejected a move to Al-Hilal during the summer and has continued to star for Ruben Amorim’s side since deciding to stay at Old Trafford.
Football Insider revealed on 23 October Bayern Munich are readying a bid for Fernandes, something that is made easier by a little-known clause in his contract.
BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone reported on 24 October Fernandes has a release clause in his Man United contract worth £56.68million that any clubs outside of England can trigger.
Man United want big-money fee for Bruno Fernandes
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Fernandes is only likely to leave Man United on a free transfer.
The 31-year-old’s current contract is set to expire at Old Trafford in June 2027.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about whether Fernandes could join another European club, Borson said: “I think it’s unlikely. It depends if there’s a transfer fee and the expectation has always been that there would be a transfer fee.
“I think until he’s a free transfer, I think he’s similar to a player like Bernardo at City, where you get to a certain age, a certain quality and a certain wage, and the only way you can really move is on a free transfer because the only clubs that are in the market for you are teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid and PSG, but only on the basis of a free transfer.”

Fernandes has led Man United to three straight victories in the Premier League, with his side now sitting sixth in the table.
Fernandes backed to stay at Man United
Borson believes Fernandes is likely to remain at Old Trafford if he doesn’t want to join a club in Saudi Arabia due to the limited options for him in Europe.
“I think actually Real Madrid and PSG probably wouldn’t go for players of that age,” said Borson.
“I know that they have been rumoured over the years for players like Bernardo and Fernandes. They may be interested on the short-term free transfer, but there are limited clubs in Europe that can afford the sorts of wages that would be required even where there’s a free transfer for Fernandes and that tier of player.
“So, if he doesn’t want to go to Saudi, I think the likelihood is that he sees out his contract at United.”
Man United’s next fixture sees them take on struggling Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday (1 November).
