Stefan Borson: Tottenham could agree Rodrygo deal after Real Madrid latest

Tottenham are considering a move to sign Real Madrid star Rodrygo ahead of the January transfer window.

Tottenham were linked with Rodrygo in the summer, but a move to north London failed to materialise.

Rodrygo also emerged as a target for Man City as they scoured the market for a potential replacement for Savinho, who came close to joining Tottenham.

However, Savinho signed a new contract with Pep Guardiola’s side, putting the rumours to bed over his potential move to north London.

Football Insider revealed on 13 November Tottenham remain interested in signing Rodrygo, with the winger believed to be “unhappy” at Real Madrid.

Tottenham could sign Rodrygo on loan deal

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Tottenham could agree a deal to sign Rodrygo on loan as the January transfer window edges closer.

The 24-year-old has started in just three of his 13 appearances for Real Madrid this season, while he’s failed to add any goals to his two assists.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the possibility of Tottenham signing Rodrygo, Borson said:“Well, I think to do it permanently would be almost impossible for all but a couple of sides.

“I think the loan situation is different, of course, because there’s a sliding scale as to what people pay. Do they pay a loan fee? Do they pay all his wages? Do they pay a loan fee plus his wages?

“That depends on how much Real Madrid want him out the door, want to see him in a different league and if other people want to take that gamble.

“I think it looks like he’s the sort of player that could interest Spurs on a loan, especially if the purse strings are being loosened by the Lewis family and they want a bit of magic dust into the side. He could be a good player for that.”

Rodrygo has registered 68 goals and 53 assists in 283 appearances since joining Real Madrid from Santos in 2019.

Tottenham facing Ivan Toney stumbling block after tax issue

Meanwhile, Spurs are looking for a new striker in January following their inconsistent form in front of goal this season.

Football Insider revealed on 7 November Tottenham are willing to offload one of their forwards to agree a deal for Ivan Toney, who played under Thomas Frank at Brentford.

However, Toney’s tax situation in Saudi Arabia is expected to be a major stumbling block in him returning to the Premier League.

The 29-year-old joined Al-Ahli from Brentford for £40million in the summer of 2024.
