Stefan Borson drops verdict on Man City activating ‘£100m release clause’

It “wouldn’t be a great look” for Man City to trigger Bruno Guimaraes’ £100million release clause during their ongoing case against the Premier League.

That is the view of former City financial advisor Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that barristers could use City’s £100million interest in their legal argument.

City are currently in the process of challenging the Premier League on their associated party transaction rules, with a hearing expected to last two weeks.

At the same time, the reigning champions have been linked to Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes – who has a release clause of £100million.

As revealed by Football Insider, Newcastle are now “anxious” about Guimaraes potentially leaving the club before June 30.

Borson explained that a £100million deal could impact the optics of City’s ongoing APT case.

£100m Guimaraes deal could impact Man City case

I think if you go into a hearing that’s specifically looking at the sort of spending requirements around the game, the last thing that you want is the barristers on the other side to point out that it is run in the backdrop of City triggering a near-record release clause,” Borson told Football Insider.

“You may have heard a bit of a sob story from Manchester City this week in respect to this case.

The reality is that they have won four titles on the run and so paying the release clause of a footballer for £100million wouldn’t be a great look.

It’s pretty subtle, but these are cases that can turn on fine margins.

So I think that they would probably not want to do that in the middle of the case.
