Stefan Ortega could agree Man City deal after ‘big’ twist – sources

Manchester City could agree a new contract with Stefan Ortega and make him the No.1 goalkeeper if Ederson leaves the club this summer.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed there have been rumours Ortega isn’t happy about being No.2 to the Brazilian international.

Football Insider revealed on 24 May the Citizens could sell Ederson for a “big fee” after Saudi Arabian clubs have expressed an interest in signing him this summer.

O’Rourke suggested selling the 30-year-old would allow Man City to make Ortega first choice and bring in a No.2 that’s happy to play second fiddle at the Etihad.

Ortega is under contract until June 2025, but reports have suggested the 31-year-old is yet to reach an agreement over a new deal after the club have offered him an extension.

Stefan Ortega could become first-choice Man City goalkeeper

Ortega joined Man City on a free transfer from Arminia Bielefeld following their relegation from the Bundesliga in 2022.

The German has kept eight clean sheets in his 19 appearances this season, while Ederson has recorded 16 shut-outs in his 43 outings.

After filling in for his injured teammate in the final couple of games of the campaign, the goalkeeper is expected to start in the FA Cup final against Manchester United this weekend.

O’Rourke revealed offloading Ederson could appeal to Etihad chiefs as they look to bring in some “much-needed revenue” to balance the books this summer.

Pep Guardiola is expected to once again freshen up his squad as he looks to continue setting the pace after claiming the Premier League title for a fourth season in a row.

Bernardo Silva is another first-team player who could potentially be set to leave the Etihad after Football Insider revealed on 22 May the club will accept a bid in the region of £50million for the midfielder after PSG have expressed an interest in signing him.

In other news, 29-year-old is “very unhappy” at Man City.
