Stephen Welsh backed to quit Celtic this summer after confirmed news – expert

Frank McAvennie has claimed Celtic defender Stephen Welsh will be “on the move” this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said that even though Cameron Carter-Vickers is injured and the league is officially won, Welsh will still be a back up player for the remaining games of the season.

Staple defender Carter-Vickers has undergone surgery on a knee injury and has been ruled out until pre-season.

On Sunday’s game (7 May) against Hearts, where a 2-0 win officially clinched the Scottish Premiership title, it was Yuki Kobayashi and Carl Starfelt in the starting lineup and Welsh was not even named on the bench.

Instead, B team defender Bosun Lawal was waiting on the sidelines in case he was called upon.

Welsh, 23, has made just six appearances for the Hoops this season and will have two years left on his Parkhead contract at the end of the current campaign.

When asked if Welsh will be used in the remaining games of the season, McAvennie told Football Insider:I think he is one of the ones that will be on the move so he may give him a game.

But Kobayashi will be the one. Starfelt has just moved to the right hand side and he is more natural there.

He looks so unnatural when he gets the ball off the keeper, he can’t kick with his left foot but he gets away with it. Kobayashi is left-sided so it balances out.

I think Welsh will be on the bench just in case and won’t let us down. There is nothing magnificent about him but he does his job and that is what Ange will be hoping for but he will be a back up.

In other news, Celtic fear Postecoglou has already decided to join Premier League club.
