Bruce singles out mistake that cost Aston Villa the match v Derby

Steve Bruce singled out the mistake made by Glenn Whelan as costing Aston Villa the game against Derby County, but believed his side made mistakes all over the pitch.

Speaking after the game with the Birmingham Mail, the Villans boss revealed that he thought Whelan’s mistake of passing the ball to Matej Vydra who then set up Andi Weimann to score.

“Glenn is an experienced international football and there’s nobody more disappointed than he will be today,”said Bruce.

“However he’s been very, very good for us and he will continue to be.”

Whelan has made 20 appearances for Aston Villa this season across all competitions, and has only missed one of the club’s league games.

Bruce went on to say that Whelan “wasn’t alone” in making a mistake, and said he saw too many for his liking.

Aston Villa lost 2-0 to Derby with Weimann scoring in the 24th minute before Johnny Russell scored in stoppage time to make the victory comfortable.

The loss leaves the Villans in fifth, four points behind Derby and only a point in front of Leeds United who are just outside the play-off positions.

The 2-0 defeat was Aston Villa’s first loss in six league games, ahead of them playing Sheffield United next Saturday at Villa Park.

In other Aston Villa news, the club could make a move for this 17-goal striker in January with an English club willing to discuss a seven-figure fee.
