Steve Bruce has stated that Pierluigi Gollini knows he has made a “mistake” after his error resulted in Aston Villa being beaten 2-0 by Leeds at Elland Road on Saturday evening.

The 21-year-old goalkeeper failed to punch the ball away from a cross which led to Leeds winger Kemar Roofe heading in the opener for the home side on 68 minutes.

The game was in the balance at that stage, but after Roofe’s goal, Garry Monk’s side punished their opponents with striker Chris Wood sealing all three points in stoppage time.

Former Premier League manager Bruce, who tasted his first defeat as Villa boss after eight games, had this to say about the young Villa ace.

“He’s OK. Disappointed I would have thought. Everybody makes a mistake,” said Bruce, as quoted by the Birmingham Mail. “You are not going to get me sitting here criticising any individual.

“He’s made a mistake, he knows he’s made a mistake. We move forward.”

Italian Gollini has made 18 appearances for Villa in the Championship this season, helping his side keep four clean sheets.

He was a summer signing from Hellas Verona and was purchased by Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked as Villa boss in mid-October.

The defeat against Leeds has dented Villa’s chances in their fight for promotion as they are now six points off the top six.

The Midlands side host relegation threatened Wigan next Saturday, looking to record their fifth win under Bruce and maintain their unbeaten home record.

In other Aston Villa team news, this 28-year-old is not good enough for the club in one of three things we learned after Leeds defeat.
