Steve Nicol: I would much prefer Liverpool ace Coutinho over Tottenham counterpart

Steve Nicol has revealed that he would much prefer Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho over Tottenham ace Christian Eriksen.

The attacking midfielders are regarded as two of the most creative players in the Premier League and usually operate in the number 10 role behind the striker.

Coutinho, 25, has become a huge favourite at Anfield since his arrival in 2013 and lit up the top flight with his trickery.

The Brazil international made 36 appearances across all competitions last season for the Merseyside club, scoring 14 goals and supplying nine assists in return.

Meanwhile, Spurs’ Eriksen enjoyed a fine season at White Hart Lane and outperformed Coutinho statistically.

The 25-year-old made 48 appearances across all competitions, scoring 13 goals and supplying 23 assists.

Liverpool legend Nicol is adamant that Coutinho is a better play than Eriksen and stated that is why the former has been linked with a move to Barcelona.

“The last time I heard I didn’t hear Christian Eriksen being mentioned in the same breath as Barcelona,” Nicol told ESPN FC. “As good as Christian Eriksen is you’re taking Coutinho over Eriksen every day of the week.”

The Premier League has a number of creative players, with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Mesut Ozil fitting the playmaker mould.
