Steven Gerrard breaks silence on managerial return after Rangers announcement reveal

Steven Gerrard has answered questions on a potential return to management amid links with the vacancy in the Rangers dugout.

The 44-year-old, who won the Scottish Premiership at Ibrox in the 2020-21 campaign, has been out of work since the end of January after leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq.

Gerrard quit Rangers in November 2021 to join Aston Villa – where he was sacked just under 12 months later.

The legendary ex-Liverpool midfielder is among the favourites to return to Ibrox for the 2025-26 campaign following the sacking of Philippe Clement.

Football Insider revealed last week (31 March) that Rangers are not expected to make any announcement on a manager appointment until after the final day of the 2024-25 campaign.

Barry Ferguson is currently in interim charge but his chances of landing the full-time gig may have been damaged after losing three consecutive home games.

Gerrard speaks out on potential return to management

Speaking on That Peter Crouch Podcast (2 April), Gerrard suggested he is not ready for a return to the dugout after a chastening experience in Saudi Arabia – where he won just 19 of 55 games in charge.

He said: “I don’t want to be back in work, not at the moment. I’ve just come out, so I am happy waking up, being free, doing the family stuff and being free from the stress.

“I will go back in at some point but when it is round the clock for 18 months, I just want to be free and do normal things that you can’t do when you are coaching like a game of golf or go down the boozer. I want to do normal things that you can’t really do when you’re coaching, so I am all good.

“I’m good and stress free. I’m out of work in terms of the coaching and management, which is obviously 24/7.”

Gerrard took charge of 192 games at Ibrox and won their only Scottish Premiership title since the 2010-11 campaign.

He then won just 13 of 40 games in charge at Aston Villa before being replaced by Unai Emery – who has taken the Midlands giants to new heights.

Rangers unlikely to lure ex-Leipzig boss to Ibrox

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed last week (1 April) that Rangers will struggle to lure highly-rated German boss Marco Rose to the club this summer.

The 48-year-old was sacked by RB Leipzig on 30 March after two and a half years with the Bundesliga outfit.

Rangers are planning to be in the market for top managers this summer given the size and stature of the club – and ambitions of prospective new owners 49ers Enterprises.
