Steven Gerrard: Liverpool legend jets out to Saudi Arabia for Al Ettifaq talks – sources

Former Rangers and Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is in Saudi Arabia for talks with Al Ettifaq over becoming their new manager, sources have told Football Insider.

Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq have made an approach for the Liverpool legend, 43, who has been out of work since being sacked by Villa last October.

The Saudi League is looking to bolster its profile having signed the likes of superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Al Ettifaq are now advancing in their pursuit of Gerrard as they look to add another marquee name to their growing roster of big-name players and coaches.

The former Premier League boss was relieved of his duties at Villa Park after less than a year in charge following a disappointing start to their 2022-23 campaign.

Gerrard recorded just two wins of the 12 top flight games he took charge of.

He was replaced by Unai Emery at the helm who guided the Villans to a European spot after an incredible run of form in the second half of the season.

Gerrard had more luck in charge of Rangers and guided them to their first league title in ten years.

He was also an important part of their European campaign which culminated in a Europe League final under his successor Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Al Ettifaq finished seventh in the Saudi Pro League this season out of 16 teams with 37 points from 30 games.
