Steven Gerrard return plan ripped apart at Rangers – ‘face reality… think again’

Steven Gerrard has been one of the runners and riders in the mix for the Rangers job since Philippe Clement was removed from the dugout in February.

He previously spent just over three years at Ibrox as boss, winning the Scottish Premiership title in his last full season.

It has been widely reported that Real Madrid assistant and son of Carlo, Davide Ancelotti, 35, has also been approached over the vacancy.

Barry Ferguson will not land the full-time gig at Rangers after a below-par spell in interim charge at Ibrox.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has insisted Rangers must stop getting “excited about names” and “face the reality” of the club’s situation.

‘Gerrard return would be a mistake for Rangers’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted it would be a mistake for Rangers to go back to Gerrard this summer.

He previously left the club for Aston Villa in 2021 but was sacked by the Premier League club and replaced with Unai Emery in under a year.

Wyness insisted an experienced manager is needed with Celtic’s Brendan Rodgers now the benchmark for an incoming Ibrox boss.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Gerrard keeps on being linked.

“I think it would be a mistake for Rangers to go back for him.

“I hope the new group at Rangers understand the enormity of this challenge. They’ve got to put someone in place to beat Celtic.

“Brendan Rodgers is the benchmark, and they’ve got a very strong squad.

“An experienced manager, not someone like Gerrard, can do that. I want Rangers to think again.

“They can’t get excited about names going forward – they’ve got to look at the reality.”

Ibrox expansion coming after Rangers takeover latest’

A US consortium, which includes Leeds United and 49ers Enterprises chairman Paraag Marathe and health insurance tycoon Andrew Cavenagh, is looking to complete its Rangers takeover deal within the coming weeks.

Finance expert Stefan Borson has exclusively told Football Insider (8 May) that it would make a lot of sense to add more seats at Ibrox if there is the necessary ticket demand.

Borson insisted qualifying for the Champions League will make an “enormous” difference to Rangers’ finances alongside their potential expansion plans.
