Steven Gerrard to Rangers: Boardroom source reacts to ‘new whispers’
Rangers will have started the search for their next permanent manager after sacking Philippe Clement last week.
Barry Ferguson has arrived as interim boss with a clutch of Ibrox favourites joining his coaching staff – and he got off to a good start on Wednesday (26 February) with a 4-2 win over Kilmarnock.
The 47-year-old has spoken of his desire to be “judged at the end of the season” when asked if he wants to take the role full-time.
But former Ibrox striker Mark Hateley has insisted Steven Gerrard would be the perfect manager to lead Rangers forward amid rumours linking him with a return.
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – had his say on Gerrard potentially heading back to Glasgow.

Gerrard unlikely to make Rangers return, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted he doesn’t believe Gerrard will return to Ibrox.
He suggested Rangers may have wanted to keep Clement in place before fan pressure became too much in the wake of the loss against St Mirren.

Gerrard spent three rather successful years at Ibrox, stealing the Scottish Premiership trophy away from Old Firm rivals Celtic in the 2020-21 season.
He moved on to Aston Villa and then Al-Ettifaq, but is now unattached after leaving the Saudi club.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There are all sorts of whispers already about Steven Gerrard coming back.
“I don’t believe that will happen.
“There are lots of possibilities being talked about, but I think it’ll be a case of wait and see.
“We’ll have to see how this latest soap opera at Ibrox unfolds.
“They’ll have preferred to keep Clement in but I think the St Mirren defeat was just too much.”

Rangers takeover still at ‘very early’ stages
Another factor potentially influencing the manager search is ongoing takeover interest at Ibrox.
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson told Football Insider that the 49ers’ takeover of Rangers is still in the “very early” stages.
He explained that the Glasgow club have not yet made a takeover disclosure – something they are obligated to do once a concrete bid arrives for the purchase of the club.
The takeover news comes as new chief executive Patrick Stewart undertakes an internal review at Rangers led by New York consultants Sportsology Group.
