Steven Gerrard to Ibrox: ‘Rangers fans won’t like latest development’

Steven Gerrard is the bookies’ favourite to become the new permanent Rangers boss having previously brought success to Ibrox.

Gerrard, 44, has been widely linked with the role following the sacking of Philippe Clement and subsequent interim appointment of Barry Ferguson.

He spent three rather successful years at Ibrox between 2018 and 2021, stealing the Scottish Premiership trophy away from Old Firm rivals Celtic in his final full season.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has claimed a lot of Rangers fans will be unhappy with the prospect of the Englishman returning.

Rangers fans won’t be happy with Gerrard – ‘he left them in the lurch’

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted some fans feel Gerrard “left them in the lurch” when he departed for Aston Villa.

He lasted just under 12 months at Villa before being replaced by Unai Emery at the Midlands giants.

Wyness insisted his recent experience in Saudi Arabia will not leave him better-equipped to return to Ibrox.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s a difficult one.

“I know there are a lot of Rangers fans who would be anti-Gerrard because they feel he left them in the lurch and ran away to Villa at the first opportunity.

“He had their full backing when he was at the club.

“Is Steven Gerrard the right man? Normally in football you don’t go back, but David Moyes has proven that wrong with Everton.

“With Steven, he’s only had the Villa spell – which went wrong – and mixed fortunes in Saudi Arabia.

“The Saudi experience isn’t much of a growing experience for him to then come back into Rangers.

“It really depends on the view of the new owners. It will be their decision.”

Rangers
Rangers are subject of a takeover bid from 49ers Enterprises.

Rangers owners bankroll £5m+ injection

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (12 March) that Rangers have received a £5.3million injection from their owners in the form of a new share issue.

It comes after Rangers’ owners injected £3.6million into the club last month in a similar transaction.

Rangers have been the subject of intense takeover speculation over the past few weeks and the 49ers Enterprises-backed deal appears to be progressing.
