Steven Gerrard to Rangers: ‘very surprising’ verdict issued

Steven Gerrard is among the front-runners to be named Rangers’ next boss despite him leaving the club for Aston Villa mid-season in 2021.

The 44-year-old is the favourite with the bookmakers to succeed Philippe Clement with the likes of Davide Ancelotti, Russell Martin and Danny Rohl also widely reported to be under consideration.

Gerrard delivered Rangers‘ last Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 campaign after overseeing an unbeaten league season.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has shared a “very surprising” verdict on a return for the legendary Liverpool midfielder.

Rangers fans won’t be ‘totally in love’ with potential Gerrard return, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness suggested he doesn’t believe prospective new owners 49ers Enterprises will be keen to bring Gerrard back to Ibrox.

He was sacked at Aston Villa and replaced with Unai Emery, before taking the Al-Ettifaq role in 2023 and leaving Saudi Arabia earlier this year.

Wyness claimed the Rangers faithful won’t be “totally in love” with the prospect of Gerrard returning.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Gerrard is still the favourite with the bookies at the moment.

“I’d be very surprised if the 49ers go that way, and I don’t think the fanbase would be totally in love with that decision either.

“They’ll be going through the data and conducting interviews.

“It’s a cauldron at Rangers and you’ve got to be aware of the situation you’re going into.”

Rangers have allowed three first-team stars to leave at the end of their contracts.
