Stoke beat big-six Premier League club in race to sign defender in summer
Stoke City are leading the race for Notts County defender Alfie Rice, ahead of several other interested clubs.
The Potters are looking for a new young defender, after Jaden Dixon joined Arsenal on transfer deadline day.
The 18-year-old has appeared in several Championship squads this season, but leapt at the chance to join the Gunners.
Arsenal also signed Evan Mooney on transfer deadline day, in what was a clear push to bolster the academy in the final hours of the window.
Hearts striker James Wilson was another target of Arsenal’s, but he ultimately signed for Tottenham instead.
Stoke City lead race for Alfie Rice
Rice has drawn excitement while playing for Notts County‘s B team this season, with the defender yet to make his first-team debut.
The 17-year-old made his debut for the B team almost two years ago, on his 16th birthday, but could now be set for a move elsewhere.
According to The Talent Hunter on Instagram, a “big six” Premier League club is monitoring Rice ahead of a potential move.
Wrexham, Blackburn Rovers and Salford City are also showing interest in the teenager, who would be expected to join up with their academies.
However, Stoke are said to be the current frontrunners for Rice, as transfer chiefs at the bet365 Stadium attempt to bolster their academy options.
The Talent Hunter says Rice’s situation is one “to keep an eye on” with a potential move set to take place in the coming months.
What Jonathan Walters said after Stoke exit
Dixon signed for Stoke from Tottenham in 2023, and his position in the Under-21 side will have to be replaced.
Rice appears to be that man, but the Potters will have a battle on their hands to secure his signature.
Dixon made seven appearances in Premier League 2 for Stoke this season, and has joined Arsenal in a deal reportedly worth around £500k.
Speaking after his exit was confirmed, sporting director Jonathan Walters told Stoke’s official website: “Jaden’s dedication, and his work with the staff at the football club, have seen him progress well over the past three years, having joined us following his release from Tottenham.
“He is a credit to his family and leaves with our very best wishes for his future career.” The 18-year-old will hope to impress at Arsenal, although there is a long line of defenders standing between him and Mikel Arteta‘s squad.
