‘Straight away’ – Crysencio Summerville expected to be first out the door at West Ham

West Ham have been tipped to lose Crysencio Summerville this summer if their relegation to the Championship is confirmed.

That is according to former Everton, Aston Villa and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Hammers would need to rebuild their squad if they are unable to avoid the drop.

Currently, West Ham are 18th in the Premier League, three points from safety with 12 games left to play.

Keith Wyness: West Ham face summer rebuild in the Championship

Despite the Hammers’ recent surge in form, relegation is still more than likely for West Ham.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side face a tricky run of fixtures, and with Nottingham Forest and Tottenham appointing new managers over the past week, their form could improve.

As a result, the East London side face the prospect of their team being gutted in the summer transfer window if they are to return to the Championship for the first time since 2012.

While Jarrod Bowen’s departure is widely expected if West Ham fall out of the Premier League, Wyness believes Summerville will be quick to follow.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness said: “Summerville would be one of the players who would leave straight away. He is definitely Premier League material, and there would have to be three or four from the West Ham squad.

“But I remember my time again at Villa, we just got relegated when I came in, and you have to adjust your squad to the Championship, there is no doubt about it.

“I had this debate with somebody the other day about can a Premier League squad exist in the Championship and do well? I don’t believe it can. I think you’ve got to really rebuild.

“It’s not only the longer season, but it is the quality and physicality within the Championship to me that is different from the Premier League to a degree. And there’s got to be a shift in the spine of the team in my view towards getting promotion back up.

“We’re seeing it’s a long season and there’s a big battle. We’re seeing Coventry dropping down from the top of the table just last night. It is a long season, and I’ve lived through them, and it’s tough. West Ham would have to adjust the squad.

“That would normally mean perhaps that the players that are your best assets, the Jarrod Bowens, the Summervilles, would be the ones that would go, but you’d be replacing them with players that are probably more suited to the gladiatorial approach of the Championship.”

What are the odds on West Ham being relegated from the Premier League?

According to Opta on 18 February, West Ham are still heavy favourites to join Wolves and Burnley in the Championship next season.

Currently, the Hammers have a 70.68 per cent chance of going down, making a second-tier return more likely than not.

Therefore, West Ham will need to continue their current fine form if they are to defy the odds and somehow keep their heads above water.

Summerville and Bowen are likely going to be vital if the Hammers are to succeed at this task, with a massive challenge ahead for the East London club.
