Ayoze Perez has opened up in an interview with the club about how Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has helped improve him as a player.
In an interview with UNITED, the club’s programme, the 24-year-old was honest about the weaker areas of his game and how Benitez has managed to improve his shortcomings.
“Tactically, he has been massive for me, and also mentally, to be honest”, said the striker before revealing, “I used to be a player who, with a mistake, would feel a bit of pressure; now that’s getting much better.”
Perez continued, admitting: “I’m improving in that way, and that’s because of Rafa.”
The Spaniard has made 11 appearances scoring one goal so far this season and has only not featured in one of Newcastle United’s Premier League games; which was the Magpies’ last league outing against Manchester United.
Despite being a regular under Benitez, the creative player has faced backlash from fans over his performances this season.
This is the opposite to last season in the Championship, when the 24-year-old was a fan favourite, as he scored nine goals and grabbed seven assists in 36 league appearances.
Fans were also impressed by the 24-year-old, as he opted to stay with Newcastle United in the Championship and help win promotion despite interest from Premier League teams.
Perez’s decision to stay was proven a good one, as the Magpies instantly bounced back to the Premier League, and this season they now sit in 11th, with 14 points from 12 games.
The Magpies could move into the top half of the table if results go their way and they beat Watford on Saturday.
