Sunderland could sign next Bailey Wright after major reveal – Phillips
Sunderland target Clark Robertson could turn out to be the next Bailey Wright, according to Kevin Phillips.
The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 27-year-old Rotherham defender could be a “shrewd signing” this summer given his experience at Championship level.
Football Insider revealed on Thursday that the Black Cats are racing Fleetwood Town, Plymouth and Aberdeen to the Scottish centre-half.
Robertson is out of contract next month and will be available on a free transfer this summer.
He made 16 appearances for Rotherham in the 2020-21 Championship campaign, having missed the first half of the season with a fractured foot.
A product of Aberdeen’s academy, Robertson moved to Blackpool in 2015 and three years later signed for Rotherham and helped them win promotion in the 2019-20 campaign.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if he could have a similar impact on Wearside to Bailey Wright, Phillips said: “Yeah, he might, that’d be the hope if he came in.
“Sunderland’s recruitment has improved a lot recently so any player that comes in, they will have done their homework on him. No stone will be left unturned.
“I think they will want to strengthen down the spine of the team in the summer and a centre-half like him could be a good addition.
“He has a bit of Championship experience as well so it could turn out to be a shrewd signing.”
In other news, Kevin Phillips claims Sunderland have a ‘very good’ chance of signing sought-after 21-year-old after what he has heard.
