Sunderland make ‘audacious’ move for ‘huge Real Madrid talent – a coup beyond belief’

Sunderland are in pursuit of a “huge talent” from Real Madrid and have reportedly tabled a £25million bid.

The Black Cats have been incredibly active in the transfer window so far this summer, already adding five players ahead of their Premier League campaign.

Regis Le Bris’ side brought in loanee Enzo Le Fee on a permanent deal, as well as signing Reinildo, Noah Sadiki, Chemsdine Talbi, and Habib Diarra.

However, the incomings are not expected to stop there, with Sunderland interested in Real Madrid youngster Gonzalo Garcia.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the 21-year-old would be an “enormous” signing for the Black Cats.

Sunderland ‘shooting for the stars’ with Garcia bid

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that it would be a “coup beyond belief” if Sunderland brought Garcia to the Stadium of Light.

The Spaniard starred for Real Madrid during their Club World Cup campaign, and ahead of the final between Chelsea and PSG, is the competition’s top scorer.

Wyness added that the deal is there to be done and makes sense for both parties.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I’ve got to say, I think the Sunderland transfer activity is a class above Burnley’s at the moment, and I think they’re putting together some very interesting talent.

“In terms of Gonzalo, if they were to get this one, I think it would be a coup beyond belief. This kid has performed very well at the Club World Cup. He’s got a chance to be the top goalscorer in the Club World Cup, which is not bad.

“I think he’s a huge talent and there’s a deal to be done. The more I think about it, it does make sense if he comes to Sunderland, if there is a sell-on fee, and if there is also a buyout clause for him to go back to Real Madrid.

“It gives him huge experience at his age in the Premier League, which I think Real Madrid would appreciate.

“He will probably not be in the first team squad as a regular starter, given the Real Madrid set up at the moment, so this would make great sense for both parties. Particularly for Sunderland, it would be enormous. It would be so exciting for the fan base to get a player like that joining.

“It also shows the cleverness and the audacity of Sunderland’s management right now and what they’re trying to do, and full marks to them. Shoot for the stars and make it happen. You’re a Premier League club now, so why not? I think it’s bold, it’s imaginative, and good luck to them.”

‘Sunderland race to sign Sam Johnstone’

Meanwhile, Sunderland have reportedly set their sights on a deal to sign Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

That is according to their former scout Mick Brown, who claims that the 32-year-old has emerged near the top of their list of targets.

This comes after the Black Cats missed out on a deal to sign Marcin Bulka, who had been their first-choice goalkeeping option, as he instead joined Neom SC in Saudi Arabia.

Brown told Football Insider in May that Johnstone is ready to leave Wolves in this summer’s transfer window in search of increased playing time.
