Sunderland news: Phillips issues ‘huge’ Alex Neil claim after ‘meeting him a few times’

Sunderland manager Alex Neil has “a huge job” on his hands given the mental state of his squad, according to Kevin Phillips.

The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 40-year-old, who he’s “met a few times”, is capable of turning things around on Wearside.

Alex Neil was appointed Sunderland’s new manager on Friday, 12 days after the dismissal of Lee Johnson.

The ex-Preston boss began his tenure with a 1-1 draw at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

Speaking to club media after the game (12 February), Neil said the result gives his side a platform to build from.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Neil’s appointment, Phillips said: “I’ve met Alex a few times.

“He is very passionate about football and he has experience getting teams out of leagues. He will put his stamp on things.

“It’s a difficult situation to go into because I imagine players are very low on confidence at the moment. They have dropped off completely in recent weeks. Alex has a huge job to lift those players over the next couple of games.

“He has dealt with big players and pressure situations before. He has plenty of experience so hopefully he can get them playing. Let’s hope he gets the club firing.”

The Black Cats are currently fourth in League one – four points off the automatic promotion spots.
