‘Sunderland ready never-seen-before Stadium of Light for Coventry’ – Image emerges

Sunderland supporters are set for an exciting night at the Stadium of Light as the Black Cats host Coventry City in the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final.

Regis Le Bris’ men return to the North East on Tuesday, 13 May with a one-goal advantage after beating the Sky Blues 2-1 at the CBS Arena last time out.

Breakaway goals from Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda either side of Jack Rudoni’s equaliser ensured that the Mackems only require a draw to reach this season’s Championship play-off final.

Either Le Bris’ Sunderland or Frank Lampard’s Coventry will face Sheffield United at Wembley on 24 May and battle for a spot in next term’s Premier League.

Meanwhile, posting on X (13May) Sunderland Echo journalist James Copley shared an image from the ground and wrote: “There are metal ropes hanging from the top of the Roker End. I’m told we’re going to see something we’ve never seen at the SoL before.”

Sunderland may have to win promotion to retain star players

The fact that Sunderland appear set to witness a never-seen-before tifo in the Roker End symbolises that exciting times could be ahead for Le Bris’ men.

If the Mackems can defend as well as they did in the first leg against Coventry, they should be able to pave their way to Wembley, where they will meet Sheffield United.

Beating Chris Wilder’s men in the Championship playoff final, if they reach the showpiece event, could prove to be a tough task for the Wearside outfit.

But Sunderland have already defied the odds by finishing fourth in the second tier in Le Bris’ first season in English football.

However, if the Black Cats do not make it to the Premier League, they could be set to lose their most prised assets such as England Under-21 international Jobe Bellingham.

Bellingham is subject to transfer interest from Borussia Dortmund, where his older brother Jude thrived before moving on to Real Madrid.
