Sunderland star Granit Xhaka likened to French legend, he’s been a ‘standout signing’

Granit Xhaka has been instrumental in Sunderland’s superb Premier League campaign so far, with the Black Cats captain receiving high praise for his performances.

Xhaka joined Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, and has started every league match for the club this season.

Sunderland made Xhaka club captain following the move, and his experience has proved pivotal for Regis Le Bris’ sqaud.

Chemsdine Talbi’s 93rd minute winner gave Sunderland a 2-1 win over Chelsea last time out to move the Black Cats up to fourth in the table.

Granit Xhaka receives Didier Deschamps comparison

Tony Cascarino, as per The Times [27 October], has compared Xhaka to former France World Cup winning captain Didier Deschamps.

The standout signing for Sunderland, however, has to be Granit Xhaka,” Cascarino said.

The fact that Sunderland were able to convince the former Arsenal captain to join their side speaks volumes about their ambition, with Le Bris praising Louis-Dreyfus for his crucial role in signing the 33-year-old.

Sunderland were smart to make Xhaka their captain for the season, valuing the experience of the 141-cap Swiss international, and he showed his worth against Chelsea.

Sunderland and Chelsea both have extremely young squads, but Chelsea do not have a Xhaka — he was the difference on Saturday.

Xhaka was the player anyone could turn to whenever they were in a tight spot, constantly showing for the ball and patrolling the pitch.

“Even when Xhaka misplaced a pass, he was the first to try to win the ball back, setting the standard for Sunderland’s counter press. He acts as the water carrier for this Sunderland side, covering for his team-mates.

It is not the most glamorous role, but it is one that some of the greatest teams have needed filling. Didier Deschamps did it for France as they won the World Cup in 1998, and Xhaka is doing a similar job here.

Having a seasoned professional who sets the standard in training every day, leads the team talks, and can be a cool head in the dressing room will be invaluable for Sunderland. The former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder is his manager’s representative on the pitch.

Sunderland show character in Chelsea win

Such a positive start to the season has been crucial for Sunderland‘s confidence and to set strong foundations for the rest of the campaign.

Sunderland faltered in their first big away test at Man United, but they showed strong character to come from behind to beat Chelsea.

It wasn’t a smash and grab win either, with Sunderland having a higher Expected Goals [xG] than their hosts and the same amount of big chances.

Xhaka epitomises the ambition and fighting spirit of the club, and will be eager to continue to lead Sunderland to such big wins throughout the season.
