‘Sunderland will stay in the Premier League after agreeing marquee signing’

Sunderland have been tipped to stay in the Premier League as a result of their impressive transfer business.

The Black Cats are aiming to become the first promoted side in three years to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Last season, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton all finished in the bottom three, with Luton Town, Burnley, and Sheffield United suffering the same fate the year before.

However, Sunderland have been extremely busy in the transfer market, and recently confirmed the addition of Simon Adingra.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Adingra is yet “another positive signing” for Regis Le Bris’ side.

‘Sunderland are in a fantastic place’

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Sunderland have a great chance of avoiding relegation from the Premier League next season.

The Black Cats were promoted from the Championship after winning the play-off final against Sheffield United.

Wyness added that the Wearside club are in a fantastic place ahead of the upcoming campaign.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s all right putting together young players, but the big question mark is, can they survive in that cauldron of the Premier League?

“Now they’re also putting together some experience, so I’m a big fan of how they’ve handled this window. They’ve got a lot of work done early and made some great signings.

“I’m really positive about what Sunderland have done. I think the Adingra signing is another positive one that’s in there, and now it’s up to the manager to get them all melded together. He’s done it in time to get that pre-season in, that magical pre-season.

“I’m very positive about Sunderland. I think they could be one of the few that will stay up, whereas most clubs have gone back down, as we know, over the last few seasons. I think they’ve got great hope.

“It will be good to see Sunderland back in the Premier League. We all know they’re a big club, and getting that Northeast Derby going again will be fantastic. It’s great for the game. They’re a proper club.

“I think the young chairman is doing a fantastic job, and I’m really, really pleased with them. At this stage, things are looking very positive, but we’ll be watching closely.”

‘Sunderland receive transfer boost’

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are reportedly unlikely to pursue a move to sign Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, in a boost to rivals Sunderland’s chances.

That is according to former Man United and Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who claims that Eddie Howe’s side do not view the 26-year-old among their top targets.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider that Sunderland are interested in Guendouzi, with Le Bris pushing for the deal behind the scenes.

Guendouzi, who was a young player at Lorient while Le Bris was the manager of their B team, is being considered to bolster their midfield and bring Premier League experience.
