Darren Bent claims there must be a clause for Leeds United to get out of signing Jean-Kevin Augustin on a permanent basis this summer.
The former Tottenham and Derby striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he has been left baffled by the striker’s situation at Elland Road.
As revealed by Football Insider earlier this week, Leeds may have to pay a significant penalty payment to RB Leipzig to get out of signing the striker after agreeing an £18million obligation to buy if they are promoted.
Leeds chose not to extend the Frenchman’s loan at Elland Road past the end of June, despite having a handful of Championship games left to play.
Bent admits he cannot get his head around the deal in place for Augustin and insists there has been a big mistake made if Leeds cannot get out of the agreement.
Bent told Football Insider: “Surely they’ve got to do something about that, surely they can’t buy a player if they don’t want him.
“If they don’t want him and he’s barely featured for a minute, surely not. There’s got to be a clause in there saying he’s got to play a certain amount of games or something, surely.
“Unless Leeds have bought him thinking they’re going to be alright in the Championship and then they think this guy’s got Premier League ability then fair enough but if they don’t – and I don’t know how they could know that if he’s barely played a minute – it’s a strange, strange one and one they could get stuck with.”
Augustin played just 48 minutes in three substitute appearances for Leeds before his loan move came to an end.
Marcelo Bielsa has kept faith in Patrick Bamford as his first-choice striker all season, with the former Middlesbrough man starting all but two of the club’s league games.
