Sutton: I'm huge fan of injured Celtic ace but he is not capable of teammate's Zenit masterclass
By Richard Parks
Chris Sutton has drooled over Mousa Dembele’s masterclass in Celtic’s Europa League triumph against Zenit St Petersburg on Thursday night.
The Belgian striker led the line for Brendan Rodgers’ injury-ravaged side which was deprived of a series of leading lights including his fellow front man Leigh Griffiths.
Former Hoops forward Sutton raved about the performance of Dembele, who has had a stop-start second campaign at Parkhead following his stunning debut season.
“It must be said, none of the lads in the middle could have had the influence they did were it not for Moussa Dembele finding his old form,” Sutton wrote in his weekly Daily Record column.
“The French kid needed to hold it up and bring team-mates into play for the set-up to work and he did.
“I’m a huge Leigh Griffiths fan but he couldn’t have done that job as effectively. The ball would have kept coming back.
“With Dembele winning his duels he kept Celtic’s midfield men on the front foot.”
Callum McGregor scored the game’s only goal as Celtic secured a 1-0 win to take into the second leg of the last-32 clash in Russia on Thursday of next week.
Football Insider verdict:
Griffiths is a predatory striker who is the perfect number two forward for a club of Celtic’s standing. But Dembele showed once again in a marquee match that he remains the Parkhead Daddy who can do what the other forwards at the club are just not capable of. Never mind the goals and glory, his power, touch and hold-up play puts him on a totally different level to the other strikers in Rodgers’ ranks.
