Chris Sutton: This Premiership boss would be ideal for Rangers

By Harvey Byrne

Chris Sutton has named St. Johnstone boss Tommy Wright as the “ideal candidate” to replace Mark Warburton at Rangers.

The Ibrox giants are currently on the hunt for a new manager after Warburton’s departure earlier in the month.

The club are currently sat in third place in the Premiership table following their return to Scotland’s top flight in the summer and many have considered it a disappointing season.

Meanwhile, Wright has got the Saints exceeding expectations as they sit just two places and six points behind Rangers in fifth.

Now, former Celtic striker Sutton is a big fan of the 53-year-old and has shared that he would be the perfect appointment for Rangers given their lack of funds.

“Rangers cannot afford to get this next move wrong. So they have to go for Tommy Wright,” wrote Sutton in his column for the Daily Record.

“I thought last weekend when the news first broke about Mark Warburton leaving Ibrox that the St Johnstone manager was the ideal candidate to step into the void.

“Events of the past seven days have merely strengthened my view. As far as I’m concerned, it’s an absolute no-brainer.

“Let’s deal with something right away. Talk about the likes of Frank de Boer and Alan Pardew is bonkers.

“There is not a chance these guys would consider taking the Rangers job at this moment in time.”

Former Northern Ireland goalkeeper Wright went into management in 2003 with Irish club Limavady United.

He then moved around Ireland with both Ballymena United and Lisburn Distillery before moving to Scotland with St. Johnstone in 2013.

He won the Scottish cup with the Saints just one year later in 2014 and he certainly boasts a good record in Scotland to date.

However, given some of the names linked with the Ibrox giants fans may be underwhelmed if the club follow Sutton’s advice.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have held talks with this 26-year-old about a move to Ibrox.
