Sven Botman: Pundit fears Newcastle United 'wobbling' after source's transfer update

Noel Whelan fears Newcastle might have to walk away from deals to sign Sven Botman and Hugo Ekitike if agents are “moving the goalposts”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker urged the Magpies to make a decision “quite quickly” on whether to walk away from the targets.

According to the Daily Mail (14 June) Newcastle are closing in on a deal for 19-year-old Reims forward Ekitike but have grown frustrated with Lille’s fluctuating price demands for Botman.

The club are hopeful of signing Ekitike on a long-term deal after failing in their pursuit of the teenager in January.

However, a Magpies source told Football Insider (16 June) that AC Milan have now moved into the driving seat to sign Botman.

Whelan urged Eddie Howe’s side not to be messed around by agents.

“Newcastle haven’t got enough time on their hands to be wobbling over agent fees or fees for players.” he told Football Insider.

“I think you’ve got to be saying look we want him but we’re not about to be dragged into an option here.

“The price tag had been agreed, we knew what it was, you can’t start moving the goalposts.

“I can guarantee if you start messing about too much the player will fall out of love with his parent club, because I’m sure he wants this move to happen.

“The club [Newcastle] has got to be very careful as well, you don’t want to show your hand straight away.

“You’ve also got to be aggressive with your approach to buying players, you don’t want to leave it until the last minute to get the deals done.

“You want to get the job done very quickly and so does the player, he wants to know where his future lies.”
