Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has said that Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has to take the blame for the club’s 1-0 defeat at Manchester United on Saturday.
Spurs saw themselves fall three points behind Jose Mourinho’s side after substitute Anthony Martial held off Eric Dier to net past Hugo Lloris in the second half and secure victory in a top of the table clash.
Now Gary Neville has pointed the blame at Dier’s defensive partner Jan Vertonghen, blasting the Belgian for his lack of concentration at the back and insisting he must take full responsibility for the defeat.
He told Sky Sports, via their live commentary on their website (28/10, 14:13): “They have been done by the simplest move.
“Vertonghen has to take the blame, he slept on the far side and he leaves Dier with no chance.
“It’s a lapse in concentration from the Belgian and it’s cost his team.”
The result could see Mauricio Pochettino and his men, currently sitting in third, fall eight points behind league leaders Manchester City if they can pick up victory against West Brom at the Hawthorns.
It is also their second successive defeat having seen a 2-0 lead slip into a 3-2 defeat at home to West Ham in the League Cup in midweek.
They will be hoping to rediscover their winning touch when Real Madrid visit Wembley on Wednesday for their Champions League clash, with the return fixture having ended 1-1 at the Bernabeu.
In other Tottenham news, fans were left fuming at the performance of this star man at Old Trafford.
