Tanganga looks 'nervy' at Tottenham after £22.75m transfer reveal - pundit

Alan Hutton has suggested Japhet Tanganga may be unsettled at Tottenham amid the hunt to sign Wolves star Adama Traore.

The former Spurs defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider’s Russell Edge, admitted the 22-year-old has looked “nervy” in his recent appearances.

As revealed by Football Insider on Saturday (22 January), Tottenham are putting the finishing touches on a deal for Traore after agreeing a transfer deal worth £22.75million.

This site understands Antonio Conte believes he can mould the 25-year-old into a right-sided wing-back.

Meanwhile, the Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare reported on Monday (24 January) that Spurs were still in talks with AC Milan over a possible loan move for Tanganga.

Hutton suggested the speculation, coupled with Traore’s impending arrival, is impacting the homegrown defender’s performances.

Discussing Traore’s prospective move to Spurs, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think it tells you Conte’s not happy with the options that he’s got at right-back. I mean, that’s pretty much the bottom line.

“As much as I like Tanganga, he’s a defender for me. He can play that right-side of a back three, I think that’s probably his best position.

“He’s looked a little bit nervy for whatever reason. Maybe it’s all the speculation of him possibly moving himself, new people coming in.

“That can affect your play.”

Tanganga started at right-back for Spurs’ 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday.

He has also turned out as a centre-back since Conte’s arrival in north London.

Spurs also have Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal to call upon on the right-hand side of defence.
