‘James Tavernier plays final Rangers game’ – Fans rage at Dundee Utd ‘shocker’

Rangers supporters never want to see James Tavernier at Ibrox ever again following yet another mistake against Dundee United.

The atmosphere has been tense at Ibrox this season, with the Gers falling miles behind their Old Firm rivals, Celtic, in the Scottish Premiership table and suffering some shock defeats along the way.

Philippe Clement’s time at Rangers was called following defeats to Queen’s Park and St Mirren, with Barry Ferguson called in to lead the team’s charge in a brilliant Europa League campaign.

Despite the change of managers, however, Tavernier has kept his spot in the starting lineup and has often found himself playing as one of the three centre-backs rather than at right-back.

The 33-year-old has been showing his age throughout the 2024/25 campaign, and while many hoped his position change would help with that, the veteran has continued to make foolish errors in defence.

After just 21 minutes, the Light Blues looked set for another frustrating result in front of their home fans as Samuel Cleall-Harding powered a header past Jack Butland.

To the surprise of nobody in the crowd, Ferguson’s side had conceded from another set-piece, something which has been a running theme throughout the season.

Many fans were supportive of the idea of Ferguson being appointed Rangers manager permanently this summer, but with results beginning to slide, other options are clearly being considered.

The former midfielder might not be the only figure departing Ibrox at the end of the season, though, with fans now calling for Tavernier to finally depart after allowing yet another goal to be scored from a corner.

Rangers ready for veteran defender to end decade-long stay

While Tavernier has now been at the club since 2015, many supporters believe now is the time for him to end his stay with the Gers, and even possibly retire at the end of the season.

The former Wigan Athletic defender was heavily linked with an exit during the previous summer transfer window, but a move never materialised, much to the frustration of the fans.

Now, after his mistake helped United to open the scoring, one supporter has said that he “should never be seen in a Rangers shirt again”, while another labelled him “embarrassing”.

It might be a rather sad end to Tavernier’s time in Glasgow.
