Ten Hag due ‘incredible’ Man United sack payout – top source
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted it will be “incredibly costly” for Man United to sack Erik ten Hag.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made a “schoolboy error” by allowing Ten Hag to increase his backroom staff and sign more familiar players over the summer.
The United boss is facing speculation about his future once again after early-season losses against Brighton and Liverpool.
He kept his job after an end-of-season review which will have been boosted by the victory in the FA Cup final against Man City in May.
Rene Hake, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jelle ten Rouwelaar have since joined Ten Hag’s staff – while Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have joined the ex-Ajax contingent in the dressing room.
Ratcliffe has made ‘schoolboy’ Ten Hag mistake at Man United, says Wyness
Wyness insisted it will be “very expensive to get rid of Ten Hag”, who is currently out of contract in 2026.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “The schoolboy error Ratcliffe has made is allowing the Dutch contingent to join Ten Hag not only in the backroom staff, but on the pitch as well.
“If they do pull the trigger, and I’m not saying they will yet, it becomes incredibly costly.
“Ratcliffe has now got himself in that position – it’s become very expensive to get rid of Ten Hag.
“I think because of the cost of getting rid of Ten Hag, he’s got a longer leash than we would have thought.
“That’s a problem that has been made by Ratcliffe himself – and it’s a schoolboy error.

“You’ve always got to think of this situation when you’re putting together a backroom staff.
“That’s the job of the sporting director, but United have ended up with this situation.”
