‘Terminate his contract’ – Man City fans explode over player who was ‘liability’ vs Man United

Man City fans have slammed Rico Lewis on social media after his poor performance in their 2-0 derby day defeat to Man United at Old Trafford.

City‘s title hopes suffered a huge blow at the home of their rivals as goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu saw United come away with a 2-0 win.

Mbeumo was the man to put them 1-0 up just after the hour mark, as he finished off a quick counter-attack with a low finish into the bottom-right corner past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The hosts doubled their lead through Patrick Dorgu in the 76th minute, as he got in front of Lewis to turn Matheus Cunha’s cross home from close range.

Pep Guardiola trusted the England right-back to start due to Matheus Nunes’ illness, but he struggled throughout the clash and has been torn into by their supporters as a result.

Lewis failed to contain Dorgu and was at fault for his goal

Lewis was handed only his third league start of the campaign at Old Trafford, with his last appearance from the off seeing him score twice against Exeter City in the FA Cup.

This was a much tougher game for an inexperienced Citizens back four, and Lewis looked all at sea as Dorgu constantly ran at him with intent down United‘s left flank.

Lewis needed to do much more to stop the Denmark international slipping in front of him to tap home and make it 2-0, just minutes after he had been booked for pulling him back on the counter.

The City right-back lost the most duels in the match (6), while he did not complete an accurate cross and was dispossessed twice.

Man City fans fume at Lewis after performance vs United

Lewis was targeted by Nottingham Forest during the summer transfer window, but he remained at the Etihad Stadium and signed a new deal with his boyhood club in September.

Despite him signing fresh terms, Football Insider recently revealed that City are open to offers for Lewis this month amid uncertainty around his game time.

Many fans would likely be happy to see that happen, with one taking to X after Saturday’s defeat to say: “Don’t even sell Rico Lewis, I feel bad for any club that has to have him. Just terminate his contract.”

Another said: “There’s a reason Rico Lewis couldn’t get near the team for 2 months. Liability.”

And one supporter added: “Rico Lewis is a Championship-level player, I genuinely don’t see what Pep sees in this guy.
