Terry Devlin surely Premier League-bound after what Portsmouth gem did vs Charlton

Portsmouth may struggle to keep hold of talented full-back Terry Devlin when Premier League clubs come knocking for his signature.

Pompey are just four points above the Championship relegation zone, but after a superb 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic on Tuesday, 17 February, their chances of survival have been boosted significantly.

Unsurprisingly, Colby Bishop was clinical from the spot, but it was Devlin who completely stole the show at the Valley, likely raising some eyebrows ahead of the summer transfer window.

But how did he end up at Fratton Park? The 22-year-old already has 89 first-team appearances since arriving in the summer of 2023, choosing Portsmouth over a host of big-name clubs.

Terry Devlin fires Portsmouth to victory vs Charlton

It is understood that the likes of Sunderland and Crystal Palace, both of whom are in the Premier League now, were fighting for 19-year-old Devlin’s signature three years ago.

Clearly, the Glentoran star felt that a move to Portsmouth was the right call for his career, and with four Northern Ireland caps to his name, there is very little arguing with that.

The right-back has gone from strength to strength during his time at Fratton Park, and with five goals and one assist in the Championship, this is his best season yet.

Of course, those watching Pompey’s win over Charlton would have seen that two of his goal contributions came during the 90 minutes, one of which was an absolute rocket from outside the area.

Thomas Kaminski handed Devlin’s first goal to him on a plate, allowing his long-range striker to wiggle under the goalkeeper, but his second goal was something special.

John Mousinho’s side are fighting for survival, and for such a young player to pop up with moments of brilliance, there is only one way that his career is moving in the summer.

The Premier League is home to many talented full-backs, such as Jurrien Timber, Reece James and Matheus Nunes, and Devlin could soon join that list if his performances continue in an upward trend.

The 22-year-old has the world at his feet, and if nobody comes calling this summer, it is only a matter of time before he makes it to the top tier of English football.
