'That is Great Management' - Exclusive: Phillips amazed by what Gerrard did after Rangers loss

Kevin Phillips has lauded Rangers boss Steven Gerrard for his decision to take full responsibility for the loss at St Mirren yesterday.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, said it was a “very clever” mover from the former Liverpool captain after his players’ “unbelievable” start to the season.

The Light Blues crashed out of the Scottish League Cup at St Mirren Park last night as the Glasgow giants unbeaten run came to a disappointing end.

Speaking after the 3-2 loss, Gerrard told club media that he is responsible for the 3-2 loss and not his “outstanding” squad.

Phillips urged the Scottish Premiership leaders to respond against Motherwell on Saturday and repay their manager.

“It is very clever from Steven Gerrard,” he told Football Insider. “That is great man management.

“He is not going to batter those players, they have been unbelievable this season. They are going to have an off-day.

“It is unfortunate that it is against St Mirren, in the cup when they should be turning them over but it is going to happen. You just need to look at what is happening to Celtic this year.

“It is great man management, coming out and taking the blame, but as a player you would be embarrassed. They should not be getting beat and that is no disrespect to St Mirren.

“As a player I would be desperate for the next game to come so I could try and put that right. The manager has taken it on the chin so it is now up to the players to go and get a result against Motherwell. A touch of class from Stevie G.”

In other news, it can be REVEALED that Rangers have landed a huge £6.6million windfall and more cash could be on the way to Ibrox.
