The real reason Christian Eriksen snubbed Wrexham transfer after leaving Man United

In the summer transfer, Wrexham attempted to pull off an audacious deal for Christian Eriksen despite just winning promotion to the Championship.

Wrexham stormed to the League One title in 2025 and immediately set out their stall to challenge for the play-offs in 2025/26.

The Red Dragons invested heavily in their squad, totalling around £30million spent on new players, including marquee transfers for Nathan Broadhead, Callum Doyle and Ben Sheaf.

So far, Phil Parkinson’s men have struggled for consistency in the early stages of the season, although Wrexham’s 3-2 win over Coventry City sparked hope that a play-off push is possible.

Their chances of making the top six would have certainly increased if they had pulled off the ambitious signing of Christian Eriksen.

Why Christian Eriksen snubbed Wrexham transfer

Eriksen left Manchester United as a free agent in the summer after spending three years at Old Trafford.

Unsurprisingly, the Denmark international was inundated with offers, having accumulated 136 goal involvements in 310 Premier League appearances.

Wrexham were one team linked with Eriksen, but Football Insider revealed that the 33-year-old wanted to remain at a top-flight club.

The former Tottenham midfielder ended up securing a move to Wolfsburg and has since made six appearances in the Bundesliga.

Interestingly, Wrexham chief executive Michael Williamson has revealed that Eriksen was initially wary of an approach from the Red Dragons as he didn’t want to appear in the documentary series.

“I reached out to the agent and what was really interesting in the first call is the reaction was, ‘We don’t want his story to be in a documentary, because we’ve had plenty of opportunities for a documentary for his story’,” Williamson told the That Wrexham Podcast.

“He thought we were calling not because of his footballing capabilities, but because we wanted a documentary story.

“I’m like, ‘Wait a minute. I didn’t even think about that’. Obviously, I’m aware of it, but that wasn’t the reason we were calling.

“We were calling because he could potentially be an interesting footballer, we’re looking for players that could play for us in the Championship. Difference makers that could help us be competitive on the pitch.”

What Phil Parkinson said about Eriksen to Wrexham

Eriksen became one of the Premier League’s best playmakers during the 2010s and would have been far too good for the Championship.

In July, Wrexham boss Parkinson even confirmed that talks opened to bring the midfield metronome to the Racecourse Ground.

“There was a call, a bit of dialogue over the summer, but it’s not gone any further than that,” Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales.

“But obviously he’s a majorly talented player and very well respected throughout football.”

Wrexham’s ambition had to be admired in that regard, and eventually, it should lead to them winning promotion to the Premier League.
