The real reason Nick Woltemade came off during Newcastle United debut

Nick Woltemade was impressive on his Premier League debut, but came off early during Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Woltemade signed for Newcastle in a club-record £64m deal, late in the transfer window from Bundesliga club Stuttgart.

Due to an injury to Newcastle’s other summer addition up front, Yoane Wissa, Woltemade started up front for Eddie Howe’s side against Wolves.

Woltemade impressed Newcastle legend Alan Shearer scoring the only goal of the game with a powerful header.

Reason for Nick Woltemade substitution revealed

Woltemade came off in the 65th minute for younger forward William Osula, and the reason for his substitution has now been revealed.

Sky Sports’ reporter Keith Downie revealed that the striker had requested to be taken off with his reason discussed in a post-match interview.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Woltemade said: “It felt amazing. If you win the game it’s more important too.

“The Premier league was quite hard. I had cramps. The atmosphere, the team played really good balls and involved me a lot. I think we did quite good. It was a hard game and it was important we won a game.

“I was here for four days so everything was new for me. I was focusing on myself today. The coach has given me such a good feeling. I felt good on the pitch and knew what I was doing.”

Eddie Howe will hope to recreate Alexander Isak in the aggregate

Newcastle experienced a difficult transfer window, with star striker Alexander Isak joining Liverpool in a record deadline day deal worth £125m.

Isak scored 23 goals for Newcastle last season, and the club spent funds on Wissa and Woltemade in a bid to replace the Swede’s goal output.

Wissa, who scored 19 Premier League goals will offer a proven alternative to the raw, yet exciting, Woltemade while he adjusts to life in the North East.

Howe will hope that, even if neither player can notch the same tally as Isak, they will combine to score a similar number to the now Liverpool striker.
