'He's stunned me' - Whelan delivers verdict on Leeds player after Wednesday development

Noel Whelan has claimed he’s been “stunned” by the excellence of Leeds United defender Ben White this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker explained how the on-loan Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back has made a huge impression on him.

White was named yesterday as the PFA Championship Player of the month for August after generating 44 per cent of the votes to comfortably beat Swansea City’s Borja Baston, who came second.

Whelan claims 21-year-old White is already a superior player to Pontus Jansson with just six Championship games under his belt.

“Ben White is better than Pontus Jansson, he’s stunned me how good he is,” Whelan told Football Insider. “He ticks every single box bar dominance in the air.

“He does challenge and win headers, but he is not as influential in the air as Jansson. But Ben White is better at defending, more disciplined and more intelligent in his positioning.

“He knows his job and doesn’t get caught out like Jansson. He stays close to Liam Cooper and those two are both really good on the ball and bringing it out of defence.”

White has formed a solid partnership with skipper Cooper after Jansson, who Marcelo Bielsa named as the team’s outstanding player last season, was sold to Brentford during the summer for £5.5million.
