There is a ‘huge’ stumbling block to Ivan Toney completing Tottenham transfer in January

Tottenham ramp up their search for a new striker as a reunion between Thomas Frank and Ivan Toney could be on the cards.

The Lilywhites are working on signing a new number nine in the January transfer window, particularly with Dominic Solanke out injured for the foreseeable future.

Moreover, Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider that Richarlison could leave Tottenham for the MLS, throwing Frank‘s striker position into even more disarray.

With doubts over who will lead the Spurs frontline moving forward, a shock Premier League return for Toney could be in the works.

Tottenham’s pursuit of Toney to be setback by ‘huge’ wage demands

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the ex-Brentford star is receiving heavy interest from English top-flight sides.

Sources told Football Insider that Everton are interested in Toney as they look to dispel their goalscoring woes up top.

Indeed, the Englishman and the Dane worked closely together at the Bees and a possible rekindling of their working relationship may be key to persuading him to leave Saudi Arabia.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “Well, yeah, obviously you’ve got the Tottenham link, Thomas Frank and Ivan Toney from before.

“They had great success together at Brentford. Tottenham [are] being linked with a number of strikers as it does seem that they might want to bring in a new number nine in January.

“The problem with Ivan Toney is it’s not an easy deal to do for various reasons. He’s on huge wages over there in the Saudi Pro League, so Tottenham wouldn’t be able to offer him the money that he’s earning out there in the Saudi Pro League.”

Tottenham work on Dusan Vlahovic back-up deal to solve striker crisis

Considering the 29-year-old is on a lucrative deal lasting until June 2028, the Lilywhites may be wiser to go for an easier and more affordable move.

Wyness exclusively told Football Insider that Tottenham are leading the race to sign Dusan Vlahovic in January.

The Serb is out of contract at the end of the season and is determined to leave Juventus on a free come next summer.

The 25-year-old’s eagerness to venture to a new club may force the Italians to cash in on him in the upcoming transfer window, presenting a golden opportunity for Spurs.
